Investigators probing role of jeep driver Rehan Ahmed
Friday, July 8 2005 13:34 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Investigators are probing the role of Rehan Ahmed; driver of the jeep used in the terror attack in Ayodhya on Tuesday and claimed to have got 'concrete leads' about the identity of the group behind the strike.

The role of Rehan, a local resident of Ayodhya, has come under a cloud of suspicion, as he is believed to have given 'incoherent' statements to the interrogators, official sources said in New Delhi yesterday (July 7, 2005)."His story is not normal and has several loose and incoherent ends," they said.

Spotlight: The Ayodhya crisis

Rehan has been found to be a regular visitor to the Middle East, particularly Dubai, and was there only recently, the sources said adding he had even purchased two jeeps on return from Dubai. He was a taxi driver in Dubai.

Rehan had initially told police that the terrorists, posing as tourists, had hired his vehicle from Faizabad as they wanted to pay obeisance at the famous temples of Ayodhya.

The sources said investigators had found 'concrete leads' about the terrorist group behind the attack but refused to identify it, saying it may hamper the probe.
