Centre willing to discuss amendments with lawyers Monday, July 11 2005 19:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Chennai:
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has said that the Centre was not interested in amending the laws in such a manner, which did not protect the interests of the public, lawyers and judicial system.
In a reply to the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) President M Karunanidhi, who wrote to Patil last week requesting him to reconsider some of the proposed amendments to the CrPc, against which the lawyers in Tamil Nadu were agitating, he said the Centre was willing to discuss the amendments with the lawyers from Tamil Nadu and take appropriate action.
"It is not clear as to which amendments to the CrPc they (lawyers) are agitating. If they are asked to specify their objections to proposed amendments, we can get them examined," Patil said in his letter, a copy of which was made available to the press today (July 11, 2005).
Karunanidhi, welcoming Patil's assurance, has requested the lawyers to give up their agitation.
In a statement, he said the lawyers could discuss the matter with Patil to find an amicable solution to the issue.
