Ayodhya attack: Police yet to make any breakthrough Wednesday, July 13 2005 12:00 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Lucknow:
Exactly a week after the terror attack in Ayodhya, Police and Intelligence agencies are still groping in the dark about the identity of slain terrorists though they have rounded up over 20 people for questioning.
No one has so far been formally arrested but over 20 people, including six activists of outlawed SIMI, have been detained for questioning, Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha told reporters in Lucknow yesterday (July 12, 2005).
"Calls made by militants from mobile phones to their contacts in different parts of the country have been traced and are being checked," he said.
The hardware of the computer used by the militants for chatting has also been seized; Sinha said but refused to divulge any further information citing security reasons.
He said Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Gujarat Police besides the central intelligence agencies are assisting Uttar Pradesh Police in investigations.
Sinha said Rehan, the driver of the jeep used in the attack, is fully cooperating with police but refused to say whether he is a suspect.
He said investigations are on and it is not proper to disclose every thing 'pre-maturely' at this stage.
A report from Ayodhya said though the magisterial inquiry into the attack had begun yesterday, no one has turned up so far to depose.
Additional District Magistrate (Faizabad) N K Patil, who is conducting the inquiry, would visit the acquired land tomorrow to record statements of the security personnel.
Patel said he would submit his report within a fortnight. As many as 10 First hand Information Report (FIR's) had been registered at the Ramjanambhoomi Police Station in connection with the July 5 attack.
According to one of the FIRs, Senior Superintendent of Police (Faizabad) and his colleagues fired several rounds at the militants to foil the attack.
