Two policemen were held in confinement by a group of women for a couple of hours after they allegedly beat up two persons including a boy at village Khyawada near Shivpuri, official sources said today (July 21, 2005).
Soon after the police rescued their colleagues from the angry villagers yesterday (July 20, 2005), the women, alleging atrocities by police, staged a roadblock on the Sindh Bridge for nearly two hours, sources said here.
District collector M Geetha has asked a Deputy Collector to conduct a probe into the incident, they said.
The protesters alleged that some police personnel at Mangroli police check post beat up one Asharam Dheemar (26) and Balbir Batham (12) at a temple, sources said adding the
villagers rushed the injured to a hospital and tied up the policemen.
Refuting charges of atrocities, sub-divisional officer of police (karera) Mohinder Kanwar said the police team was attempting to bust a gang of gamblers when they were attacked.
A large police force rushed to the village and rescued the policemen, he said adding several villagers were booked for attacking the police and further action was on.
Meanwhile, villagers have threatened to launch an agitation of criminal cases were not registered against the erring policemen.
