Man accused of raping daughter-in-law arrested Friday, July 22 2005 16:38 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Nagaon (Assam):
A man who was absconding after allegedly raping his 19-year-old daughter-in-law has been arrested in Nagaland, while Assam Human Rights Commission has suo motu asked for a police report on the incident, which was a re-run of the much publicised Imrana rape case.
Moinuddin Bhuyan, the 60 year-old Bangladeshi migrant, was arrested from Dimapur in Nagaland by a Nagaon police team after an FIR was filed by the woman on June 27.
He was produced yesterday before the chief judicial magistrate's court, which remanded him to police custody for five days.
In a re-run of the Imrana incident, the woman was raped by her father-in-law on May 25 when her husband and mother-in-law were away from home.
When she approached the local Islamia Madrasa immediately after the incident, its head passed a 'fatwa' (religious edict) that the victim leave her husband as, according to the Muslim religious laws, she had no moral right to be with him.
The woman told reporters that she filed the FIR as she received no justice from the religious body. "As I have nothing left in my matrimonial home now, I will not go back there. I want only justice now," she said.
Based on media reports, the AHRC took suo motu cognisance of the case and yesterday directed the Nagaon superintendent of police to submit a report on the incident by September 6.
