Second man arrested in anti-terror probe in London Saturday, July 23 2005 20:30 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
London:
A second man was arrested in connection with Thursday's failed bomb attacks on London's transport system, hours after another person was held and a suspected militant killed by armed officers in a subway shooting, police said today (July 23, 2005).
Metropolitan police said the man was arrested late last night in Stockwell, the South London neighbourhood close to the scene of one of the attempted attacks on Thursday and where a suspect was shot dead by police as well as another held yesterday.
He was thought to be the son-in-law of an older woman living at an address raided by police. His wife and young son were also led away by police.
The man held in the earlier police raid yesterday at Stockwell was still being questioned at a high-security London police station. He has not been named.
Police have not released the identity of the suspected suicide bomber, shot dead by armed officers at the Stockwell Tube station yesterday, as also the extent of his connections with the alleged Thursday bombers. His death was expected to renew controversies about killings by police firearms officers.
The Mile End Tube station in east London was briefly closed and evacuated following a security alert today. The station was closed for around 30 minutes and a witness told
BBC that he had seen smoke coming from a carriage.
