Chennai: Mild tremors were felt in some parts of the city last night (July 24, 2005), in the aftermath of the strong earth quake off Nicobar Islands but there were no reports of casualty or damage to the property, police and officials said.

The tremors were felt in Adayar, Besant Nagar, Mylapore, Anna Nagar and Elephant Gate areas around 9.12 pm, triggering panic among the people.

Dr P C S Rao of the Seismology wing of the Regional Meterological Centre (RMC) here told PTI that an earthquake of great intensity measuring 7.2 on the richter scale was recorded off Nicobar Islands.

He, however, said the RMC was not issuing any tsunami warning.

The tremors were felt by some of the employees on duty at the meterological office also.

State Government officials said there were no reports of any casualty or damage.

However, people have been advised not to go near the sea as a precautionary measure.
