Navy rushes rescue teams to Jui, rains continue

Mangaon (Dist Raigad, Maha): Navy today (July 27, 2005) rushed two rescue teams to Jui village in Raigad district, worst hit by floods and landslide, even as heavy incessant rains continued to batter the Konkan region of Maharashtra.

However, the teams are yet to reach the village and rescue operations have still not commenced, as the place is inaccessible due to heavy floods, district authorities said.

Heavy rains continued to lash the district on the fourth day today (July 27, 2005), however, there are no fresh cases of landslides from the district, official sources said.

In Kondiwate, where 34 people were killed in a landslide, only three bodies were recovered till yesterday (July 26, 2005) while the search is on for the remaining bodies, the sources said.

Mangaon on the on the Mumbai-Goa NH 17 is totally flooded and Panvel town in Raigad district is also cut off from rest of the state following heavy rains, thereby hampering vehicular movement on the highway, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was to undertake an aerial survey of the district, has cancelled the tour due to inclement weather.
