Firing at Army office in Delhi Cantt; sentry hurt Friday, July 29 2005 20:05 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
In a sensational incident, the office of Army's Engineers Regiment in high-security Delhi
Cantonment was today (July 28, 2005) fired upon by some car-borne unidentified
persons injuring a sentry.
Police discounted the possibility of it being a terror attack but said all angles of investigation were being pursued. "It does not look like a terror attack as per the
preliminary information," Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) B S Bassi told sources in New Delhi in reply to a question.
An Army spokesman said a black Qualis, with two persons inside, stopped near the gate of 4 Engineers Regiment office on Thimayya Road.
The jawan on sentry duty asked the driver not to halt in front of the gate, the spokesman said, adding the vehicle moved about 200 yards back. Soon, the vehicle returned and
the driver fired two rounds from a suspected automatic weapon at around 1615 hrs (IST), one of which hit the sentry Shiv Kumar, police and army officials said.
The vehicle then sped away, the spokesman said adding the jawan was immediately rushed to the Base Hospital.
He said the driver was bearded and wearing a black dress while the other person had his face covered by a black cloth.
The spokesman, however, said an alert has been sounded across the national capital for the vehicle carrying the attackers.
