5 Militants killed in Kashmir, Shootout in Srinagar Monday, August 1 2005 14:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Five militants were killed by security forces in separate encounters in Kashmir Valley while one militant was injured and arrested in the heart of Srinagar today (Aug 01, 2005) after a hot chase by the police, officials said here (Srinagar).
Two motorcycle-borne militants were chased by security forces in Khanyar locality this morning and one of the ultras was injured in the ensuing shootout and arrested, Deputy
Inspector General (DIG), Central Kashmir, H K Lohia said.
The other militant however managed to escape, the police official said adding that the entire area has been cordoned off to nab him.
According to a Defence spokesman here, three militants were killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Handwara area of Kupwara district in an operation launched last night (July 31, 2005).
Two militants were shot dead in another encounter in Kulgam area of Anantnag district and a large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the
killed militants, he said.
The identity and group affiliation of the ultras was being ascertained, the spokesman said adding that one more operation was going in the forest area near Vilgam village in
Kupwara district.
