Govt to take Nanavati report in the monsoon session Wednesday, August 3 2005 13:20 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Government will table the report of Nanavati Commission, which probed the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, in Parliament during the ongoing monsoon session after clearance by the Union Cabinet, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said in the Rajya Sabha today (Aug 3, 2005).
"The report given by Nanavati Commission has been examined by the Home Ministry. We have prepared an Action Taken Report (ATR) on it, which is before the Cabinet. In a dayor two, it will be cleared (by the Cabinet)," he said during Zero Hour.
Patil made these remarks after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members led by Balbir Punj waved a newspaper report on findings of the Commission and demanded tabling of the report during the current session.
In the midst of an uproar by BJP members, Patil said after clearance by the Cabinet, the report would be presented in Parliament.
To a specific query by senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha whether the report would be tabled before the end of the six-month deadline to make the findings of the Commission
public as per rules, the Home Minister said "Yes, that is what we are trying to do."
The Nanavati Commission had presented its report to the Home Minister in February this year and the six-month-period for placing it in Parliament expires on September nine.
