Nanavati panel report to be tabled on August 8 Saturday, August 6 2005 12:53 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The report of the Nanavati Commission, which probed the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, and the action taken document will be tabled in Parliament on August eight, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee indicated in Lok Sabha yesterday (August 5, 2005).
When the issue was raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Deputy Leader V K Malhotra, the Speaker said he had spoken to Home Minister Shivraj Patil who had informed him that it will be done on Monday (August 8, 2005).
The Union Cabinet had on Thursday night (August 4, 2005) approved the Action Taken Report (ATR) of the Government on the recommendations of the Nanavati Commission.
Malhotra contended that while there have been obituary references in the House on terror attacks in Britain and Egypt, there has been no such reference for over 3000 people who lost their lives in the 1984 riots. An obituary reference should be made in the House for them, he said.
The BJP member said the Government had rejected the recommendations of Phukan Commission, which went into the Tehelka defence expose, and it should not follow the same course on the Nanavati Commission's report.
