CPI demands original bill on Women's Reservation Sunday, August 7 2005 20:21 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Ranchi:
The CPI (Communist Party of India) today (Aug 07, 2005) opposed any more debate outside Parliament on the long-pending Women's Reservation Bill and demanded an open discussion on the floor of the House before putting it to vote.
''Recently we had an all-party meeting on the issue and we have been having discussion on it since 1996. But solution to the original bill lies inside the House, which is the highest platform,'' CPI general secretary A B Bardhan told a press conference here (Ranchi).
Like the CPI (M) (Communist Party of India Marxist), the CPI also opposed any change to the bill and rejected the idea of an increase in the total number of seats to facilitate passing of the bill.
''There have been instances in the past when consensus failed and bills were passed. This bill can also pass by 2/3rd majority in the House,'' he said.
The CPI (M) politburo member, Brinda Karat, had yesterday (Aug 06, 2005) advocated on the same line and expected passing of the bill without any modification and delay.
