Govt agrees for discussion on Nanavati report, ATR Wednesday, August 10 2005 11:27 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Under attack from both the Opposition and its Left allies, the government yesterday (August 09, 2005) agreed for a discussion on the Nanavati Commission Report on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the Lok Sabha on August 10, 2005.
The government's decision was conveyed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to BJP Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra over telephone.
"Azad said the government was ready for a discussion and we insisted that they allow an adjournment motion, to which he agreed," Malhotra told PTI.
Earlier in the day, several NDA MPs gave notices for adjournment motion against the UPA government's "failure" to take action against those indicted by the Commission.
The Opposition alliance has called a meeting of its leaders tomorrow morning to draw up the strategy in Parliament for the day.
The BJP and its allies also issued whips to their MPs to be present and vote for the motion, alliance sources said.
Malhotra, Akali Dal leader S S Dhindsa and Prabhunath Singh (JD-U) are among the leaders who have given notices for the adjournment motion.
The Nanavati Commission report today rocked Parliament as BJP and Akali Dal members made a vociferous demand for action against those involved in the violence leading to adjournment of both Houses for the day.
