NDA to participate in Parliament on Nanavati report Wednesday, August 10 2005 11:48 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
With the Government agreeing for a discussion on the adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha moved by the opposition on the Nanavati Commission report, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders today (Aug10, 2005) decided to participate in it but threatened to disrupt the proceedings in Rajya Sabha if a similar debate was not allowed.
"Now that the Government has agreed to a discussion on the adjournment motion, the question hour will be suspended and our MPs will vociferously raise the issue of the
Government's refusal to take action on the Commission's findings," Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Sushma Swaraj told reporters after a meeting of NDA leaders chaired by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani.
Swaraj said the NDA members in Rajya Sabha would be seeking a discussion under Rule 167, which provides for voting.
"While Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Defence Minister and Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee would be present in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be present in Rajya Sabha and we would expect him to reply to the debate," she said.
Swaraj, who is BJP's Deputy Leader in the Upper House, however, warned that the Opposition would not allow transaction of business in the Rajya Sabha if their demand was not met.
Nitish Kumar Janata Dal (JD) United (U), B K Tripathi Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Jaswant Singh and S S Ahluwalia attended the 30-minute long meeting amongst others.
Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned without transacting any business yesterday (Aug 9, 2005), with the Opposition demanding a discussion on the findings of the Nanavati Panel, which probed into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the Government's Action Taken Report (ATR) on it.
