Narendra Modi should resign as CM: Ambika Soni Friday, August 12 2005 17:29 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Chennai:
The Congress today (Aug 12, 2005) demanded that the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi resign, owning moral responsibility for the 'Gujarat carnage.'
AICC (All India Congress Committee) general secretary Ambika Soni told reporters at the airport here (Chennai) that by the resignation of Jagdish Tytler from the Manmohan Singh Ministry, the Congress had set a moral example. 'It is imperative for the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and other parties to follow the example by asking those responsible for Gujarat riots to resign,' she said.
She said it was a fact that the Sikh community was at the receiving end after the assassination of Indira Gandhi. A feeling of outrage was felt not only by the Sikh Community but also by all sections of Indians then, she said.
It was not a question of attack on one community then but on the entire country as such, she said adding this was rightly pointed out by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during
his intervention in both Houses of Parliament when they were discussing the Nanavati Commission's report.
On the Women's reservation bill, she said the Congress was for it but it should be done after evolving a broad consensus.
