NDA not to seek PM's resignation on Nanavati issue Sunday, August 14 2005 11:00 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Ludhiana:
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will not seek the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the 1984 anti-Sikh riots issue as it would be "stretching it a little too far", NDA Convenor George Fernandes said in Ludhiana.
Since he was not a part of the episode in 1984, "This (seeking the PM's resignation) would only amount to stretching the issue a little too far," Fernandes said while addressing a function organised by the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) at Machhiwara near Ludhiana.
However, it was intriguing that Congress President Sonia Gandhi was maintaining an "enigmatic silence' on such an important issue, he said.
Those involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots should not be spared and the Government should take responsibility for total rehabilitation of the riot-affected families as monetary compensation was not enough, he said.
The NDA Convener also criticised the Nanavati Commission report as not having brought out "the whole truth in an unambiguous manner".
He earlier told reporters here that the post-Godhra violence and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots could not be compared as the Gujarat "reaction" was a spontaneous outburst following the train burning incident.
