Rape cases should be handled by FTCs: Shekhawat
Sunday, August 14 2005 16:45 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Attributing the increasing incidents of rape across the country to "absence of fear of punishment", Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat today (Aug 14, 2005) said such cases should be tried in Fast Track Courts (FTCs) for speedier delivery of justice.

"There is no fear of punishment of imprisonment. Rape cases should be sent to Fast Track Courts," he told PTI in an interview.

In this regard, he recalled the life-term sentence awarded by a Fast Track Court in Jodhpur to the accused in the rape of a German tourist after a trial lasting merely 20 days, earlier this year.

Shekhawat also recalled another verdict recently delivered by a Fast Track Court in Jaipur last month in which the person accused of a raping a seven-month-old child was sentenced to life.
