233 deaths due to water-borne diseases in Mumbai Monday, August 15 2005 13:49 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

With 91 more deaths in the metropolis and Thane district since last night (Aug 14, 2005), the toll due to water-borne diseases, including leptospirosis, has increased to 233, Maharashtra Directorate of Health services sources said in Mumbai today (Aug 15, 2005).
However, a senior official of the state directorate of health told sources in Mumbai that, "There was no rise in fever cases and the trend has reached a plateau level. We expect it to decline in a couple of days."
Of the total deaths, Mumbai recorded 128 since July 26 deluge, sources said.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours ending at 8 am today, 958 persons have been admitted to various hospitals in Mumbai with complaints of fever while the cumulative figure for admission since July 27 was 6311, Dr Umesh Aijal, BMC health official said.
However, many of them were discharged after treatment, he added.
Meanwhile, a medical team from Delhi and Port Blair rushed here to confirm the cases of leptospirosis, have done analysis of 61 samples from Kalyan, Dombivili and Ullasnagar of which 36 were confirmed cases of leptospirosis.
"Almost 60 per cent of the cases had shown to be confirmed cases of leptospirosis," Director, National Institute of Research in Reproductive Health at Parel Dr Chander Puri told sources in Mumbai today.
