Assam: Blast at I-day celebration venue; none hurt
Tuesday, August 16 2005 12:19 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Guwahati: Suspected militants triggered an explosion at Gandhi Maidan Jubilee field, the venue of Independence day celebrations, at Digboy in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district today (Aug 16, 2005), police sources said.

The bomb, which went off at 8:55 am, was suspected to have been planted by the ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) apparently targetting yesterday's Independence Day celebrations, the sources said.

There was no report of any casualty or injury in the blast as the field was empty when it occurred.

Assam's oldest oil refinery is located in Digboy area and the ULFA had targetted oil and gas pipelines causing blasts in the run-up to the Independence day.

Senior police officials went to the spot to conduct investigation.
