PM to visit flood-affected areas of North K'taka

Belgaum: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to undertake an aerial survey of some flood-affected areas of north Karnataka today (Aug 16, 2005).

Singh would be accompanied by Chief Minister N Dharam Singh, official sources said.

The Prime Minister, who will arrive here around noon, is also expected to visit a relief camp of the flood-affected people in Belgaum district.

According to sources, the State is likely to seek Rs 1,900 crore as assistance for flood relief measures in its memorandum.

Floods have wrought havoc in five districts of Belgaum, Bagalkot, Raichur, Gulbarga and Bijapur, affecting a total population of over 29 lakh and resulting in death of 126 people.

Crop loss is estimated at Rs 1920 crore on four lakh acres of land.
