A CRPF jawan was killed and eight others, including three civilians, were injured in a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) explosion triggered by militants in Anantnag district today (August 17, 2005), official sources said.
The IED exploded on Kulgam-Qazigund road in Katran village, 75 kms from here, at around 2 p.m when the CRPF personnel were returning to their camp after delivering lunch to their colleagues deployed in the area, the sources said.
They said the blast damaged the passing CRPF vehicle causing injuries to six jawans and three pedestrains. One of the jawans later succumbed to injuries while being shifted to hospital.
The sources said the explosion was so powerful that its bang was heard in five-km radius.
The whole area was immediately cordoned off and a massive hunt launched to nab the militants, they said.
