Left must review verdict to stay away from UPA meet Friday, August 19 2005 15:56 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kolkata:
The veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) Marxist (M) leader Jyoti Basu today (Aug 19, 2005) hinted that left parties might review the decision to stay away from the meetings of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Left Co-ordination Committee next month.
"We shall discuss the matter in our party meeting in September," Basu told reporters without elaborating.
He was asked whether there was any possibility of the Left reviewing the decision as the UPA Government had accepted their suggestions on the Rural Employment Guarantee Bill as well as the Government formally calling off the strategic sale of stakes in 13 profit-making central PSUs.
The CPI (M) and other left parties were boycotting the Left-UPA Coordination Committee meetings demanding withdrawal of the move to dilute 10 per cent government stake in the public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited.
Basu, who is a CPI (M) Politburo member, was speaking to newsmen after the party's state secretariat meeting.
"The UPA Government will have to continue for another four years," the veteran Marxist said.
