Police station attacked in Manipur, 3 people injured Friday, August 19 2005 17:14 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

At least 11 people, including 3 women were injured when police resorted to lathi charge and burst tear gas shells to disperse a rampaging mob inside a police station in Manipur's Churachandpur district today (Aug 19, 2005), official sources said in Imphal.
"The mob, angry over the police attempts to bring six students arrested for defying prohibitory orders clamped in the district town to the state capital, had set afire one room
of Churachandpur police station besides four vehicles parked inside the campus and destroyed some office furniture and a signboard," they said.
The mob, comprising womenfolk and local youth also attempted to forcibly enter the nearby bungalow of the Deputy Commissioner but were prevented by the security personnel posted there, the sources said.
The police and central security forces dispersed the mob after about 30 minutes and fire brigade personnel extinguished the fire, the sources said.
The incident followed attempts by the police to bring six students, arrested yesterday(Aug 18, 2005) for defying prohibitory orders, here.
The Churachandpur district authorities had clamped the prohibitory orders under Section 144 CR Pc after Zomi Students Federation, agitating for the past several days to press their demand for improvement of infrastructure of educational institutions in the district, intensified the stir.
The six students were arrested for defying the orders.
The situation in the Churachandpur district headquarter town was reported to be very tense and senior police officials have rushed there for on the spot inquiry.
