DMK to organise women's rally on Sept 15 in Chennai Monday, August 29 2005 18:12 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Vellore (TN):
The Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam (DMK) is to organise a women's rally at Chennai on September 15, the birth anniversary of the party's founder C N Annadurai, demanding early passage of the Women's Reservation bill in Parliament.
Announcing this at the concluding session of the party's zonal conference in Vellore late yesterday night (Aug 28, 2005), the DMK president M Karunanidhi said reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures was a long pending demand and should be conceded.
On the demand for sub-reservation for backward and most backward classes women, he said this could be considered later.
He appealed to all political parties to concede the demand and co-operate with the centre in getting the bill passed.
He warned that an agitation would be launched if the Election Commission failed to take action against those responsible for filling the electoral rolls with bogus voters.
The Election Commission itself had admitted that there were over 13 lakh bogus applications submitted for inclusion in the electoral rolls in the state and had promised that action would be taken against those responsible for it. "I want to know what action the EC has taken," he said.
After consulting its allies, the DMK would announce an agitation on the issue, he said.
The conference also passed two resolutions on these issues.
