New Delhi: Monsoon Session of Parliament, hailed as 'historic' for the passage of several landmark bills, like National Rural Employment Guarantee bill and some others aimed at protection of women and gender equality, was adjourned today (Aug 30, 2005).

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had 24 sittings in the session, which passed as many as 16 legislations including the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Bill and the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Bill.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha that the session saw 'more business and more meaningful debates' than in the past.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha L K Advani said it showed how much business could be accomplished if the Opposition played a constructive role.

Due to such a constructive role played by the Opposition, the responsibility bestowed on the House was fulfilled, he said, adding that this was the 'correct approach'.

The session saw Lok Sabha discussing two adjournment motions on Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) (IMDT) Act and the Nanavati Commission on 1984 anti-Sikh riots, both of which were negative. It also saw debates on major issues like natural calamities, terrorism, imposition of President's Rule in Bihar and the law and order situation in that state.

The Prime Minister also made a statement on his US visit, which was also debated, in the House.

Speaker Somnath Chatterjee in Lok Sabha and Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in Rajya Sabha commended that the Houses worked hard and diligently, which ensured smooth conduct of the business.
