Govt skeptical to ceasefire announced by Maoists Tuesday, September 6 2005 10:39 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kathmandu:
Nepal's Government yesterday (Sept 5, 2005) expressed skepticism about the ceasefire announcement by Maoists, saying they it was 'yet to be assured of such a declaration' even as the seven-party alliance welcomed the move and appealed to the rebels to come for talks for restoring peace.
"The declaration of a unilateral ceasefire declared by the Maoists a few days ago has drawn the attention of the Government. Based on the past experiences, the Government is yet to be assured of such a declaration," said a statement issued by Information Minister Tanka Dhakal.
Maoist leader Prachanda on Saturday offered a three-month truce to create an atmosphere of talks with political parties. The cabinet held an emergency meeting with King Gyanendra on Sept 4, 2005 followed by several high-level Government meetings following the announcement.
"The seven-party alliance welcomes the ceasefire. It also calls upon the rebels to initiate a dialogue for restoring lasting peace," Nepali Congress spokesman Arjun Narsingh K C said here.
A top UN official in Nepal, meanwhile, welcomed the Maoists' announcement of ceasefire. "We welcome any move that would bring peace and security," UN Deputy Representative to Nepal Ghulam Isaczai said.
