Police chief submits report to Govt on bribe chart
Saturday, September 10 2005 19:28 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Kolkata: Acting City Police Commissioner Goutam Chakraborty today (Sep 10, 2005) submitted a report to West Bengal Home Secretary Prasad Roy on the publication of a 'bribe chart' in the police gazette.

''We have received the report. It will be submitted to the chief minister on Monday,'' Roy told newsmen.

Asked whether the chart was published by mistake, he said, ''We are going through it. But it does not appear to be a mistake. It seems to have been done deliberately''

The bribe chart, published under the head 'Miscellaneous Notice' in 'The Kolkata Police Gazette' on September five, is issued by Deputy Commissioner of the city police's Detective Department-I Gyanwant Singh.

According to the chart, an undertrial pays Rs 500 to remain outside the lock-up, Rs 200 to be served snacks and foreign liquor and Rs 100 to use a mobile phone.

Yesterday, reacting to the publication of the bribe chart, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee had described it as a serious matter and said that DC (DD-I) could not evade responsibility. ''He will have to explain.''

Pointing out that the chart contained grammatical and printing errors, the chief minister had wondered how an IPS officer could clear publication of such material.
