CPI to launch nationwide agitation on Sept 14
Monday, September 12 2005 18:14 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Raipur: The Communist Party of India (CPI) today (Sept 12, 2005) indicated that it would return to coordination committee meetings of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) if the disinvestments of PSUs is stopped and said it would hold protest meetings on September 14 demanding proper implementation of UPA's common minimum programme (CMP).

"The UPA is not implementing the CMP with right spirit because of which we will hold protest meetings throughout the country on September 14 demanding its proper implementation," CPI general secretary A B Bardhan told reporters here.

"CMP should not be violated or ignored and the UPA should stop disinvestment of PSUs. If the Centre announces to stop disinvestment of BHEL and Nav Ratna PSUs, then we will participate in the coordination committee," he said. "CMP is not only talking about the disinvestment. Issues related to poor, tribals and unorganised sectors have also been mentioned in the CMP and a bill on giving land rights to tribals has not being introduced in Parliament," Bardhan claimed.

"The bill is ready but in the name of tiger protection and environment, it is not being introduced when tigers and tribals are living in the jungle for ages and the threat on cats are from hunters and not from tribals," he said and threatened to launch a massive country-wide agitation if the bill is not introduced in next session of Parliament.

Meanwhile, Bardhan dismissed Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) statement of early Parliamentary election saying "the statement of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of a mid term poll is to keep the morale of the BJP cadre high and it has no basis."

The UPA government at the Centre would complete its tenure, he asserted.
