'Karunakaran liable for all crimes during emergency' Tuesday, September 13 2005 14:51 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kozhikode:
Not withstanding its alliance with the newly-formed Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) for the upcoming local body polls in Kerala, the CPI(M) today (Sept 13, 2005) said DIC(K) leader, K Karunakaran `should own total responsibility for all the atrocities committed in the state during the emergency period'.
'Karunakaran, who was then the Home Minister, will be held responsible for all the cruel happenings during emergency. He cannot be absolved of the charges and the blame will be attached to him till his very end', Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) state Secretary, Pinarayi Vissons from their past experience where such understandings had proved a massive failure, he said.
On the return of Kerala Congress (B) leader, Balakrishna Pillai to the UDF camp, Vijayan said it was 'shameful' on the part of Congress to readmit Pillai after both of them had seriously accused each other before parting ways.
'The Congress feels that the beleaguered UDF can be strengthened by Pillai's return and therefore it is ready to forget and forgive the past. This kind of an opportunistic approach will only further degrade the UDF', he said.
Making it clear that the CPI (M) would not share the platform with the DIC(K) during its campaign for civic polls, Vijayan said the LDF would take a decision later on the issue of sharing power with that party.
'At present, our task is to decimate the UDF at the hustings. All other issues will be taken up by the LDF later', he added.
Vijayan asked how the Muslim League, the second largest partner in the UDF, could justify the Front's decision to seek the support of the BJP, particularly in the backdrop of recent communal clashes like the Marad incident that rocked the state.
'That is why you see the League is fast losing its popularity as its cadres are totally opposed to such an unholy alliance', he said.
The statements issued by the BJP and the Congress relating to the local body elections were 'tailor-made' to suit each others interests and only gave an impression that they had failed to learn lessons from their past experience where such understandings had proved a massive failure, he said.
