BJP to launch agitation over KGB agent's charges Wednesday, September 21 2005 16:59 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Demanding a thorough probe into the allegations made by a former KGB agent about funding of Congress and Communist Party of India (CPI) by the erstwhile Soviet intelligence agency, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (Sept 21, 2005) decided to approach President A P J Abdul Kalam for his intervention and announced to launch a week-long nationwide agitation from September 25.
BJP President L K Advani and senior leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Jaswant Singh will write a joint letter to the President seeking an inquiry by a Supreme Court judge, party spokesperson Sushma Swaraj told reporters here.
She said the decision was taken at a meeting of party General Secretaries under the President-ship of Advani here today.
The meeting was also attended by Vajpayee, Jaswant Singh, Venkaiah Naidu, Bal Apte, V K Malhotra and Swaraj.
The meeting noted that the allegations made by KGB agent Vasili Mitrokhin were serious economic offences besides concerning national security and needed to be probed thoroughly, she said.
Swaraj said the Congress' dismissal of allegations was untenable as the charges levelled by the agent matched the developments and characters of that era.
