Are bookies in Vadodara placing bets on violence?
Saturday, September 24 2005 20:04 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Vadodara: The violence during the Ganesh immersion on September 17, 2005 in Moghulwada locality of the city was possibly due to bookies placing bets on whether it would occur during the procession period and is part of a larger conspiracy, a senior police official said here today (Sept 24, 2005).

"The violence in Moghulwada could be a fall-out of bookies placing bets on the possibility of violence during the Ganesh immersion procession," city Police Commissioner Deepak Swaroop told PTI.

"The violence was not a communal incident and we are taking the matter very seriously," he added.

Police has arrested four persons so far in this incident of which one is a bookie named Usman.

"The violence is part of a larger conspiracy," Swaroop said, adding that a task force was probing the matter, including questioning the four arrested.

Four persons were injured during the stone pelting on September 17 in Moghulwada during the Ganesh procession.

Police had resorted to firing in which one person was injured and another killed.
