Interpol to issue notice; tighten noose on Dawood Monday, September 26 2005 11:36 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
In what could further build up pressure on Pakistan for Dawood Ibrahim, Interpol has decided to issue a "Special International Notice" for persons wanted by the United Nations for having links with Al-Qaeda.
The Interpol General Assembly adopted a resolution at its meeting in Berlin last week which decided to issue a 'Special Interpol International Notice' for persons on the list of Al-Qaeda and Taliban and associated individuals and entities which would be circulated among its 184 member countries, official sources said here today.
The United Nations has included Dawood Ibrahim, underworld don and the alleged mastermind behind the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai, in the wanted list of individuals having links with Al-Qaeda.
Dawood figures in the list under UN resolution 1267 which mandates all nations to freeze their assets and prevent their entry into or transit through their territories.
The UN list mentions him as an Indian citizen with Ratnagiri in Maharashtra as his place of birth. He carries an Indian passport -- A-333602.
The underworld don, who is believed to be now based in the Pakistani port-city of Karachi and a Gulf country, was named by USA as Specially Designated Global Terrorist after which it decided to move the UN for freezing all his assets.
The move by Interpol may cause problems for Pakistan, who India has accused of supporting and harbouring Dawood.
