Godhra panel meets to categorize various affidavits

Ahmedabad: The Godhra Inquiry Commission today (Sept 30, 2005) held a formal meeting to decide on the various categories to sort out the affidavits received from about 40,000 post-Godhra riot victims across Gujarat.

The affidavits would be sorted into different categories depending on their nature, for instance, there are affidavits pertaining to compensation claims, rehabilitation, complaints against police, Government in-action and others, sources at the Commission said here.

The meeting was held with Government pleaders to sort out the affidavits received from Panchmahals district while affidavits from other districts would be sorted by turn, the sources said.

The Commission is scheduled to meet again on October 14-15, when it would hear the four passengers of Sabarmati Express, which was set ablaze on February 27, 2002, killing 59 persons onboard the S-6 coach. Two of the passengers, Subhaschandra Mishra and Radheshyam Mishra are from Uttar Pradesh, while two others Ramnaresh Gupta and Virpal Pat are from Surat and Vapi cities respectively.

On October 15, the Commission will also hear Vadodara city police commissioner Deepak Swarup who was IG Vadodara range when the train carnage incident took place.

Besides these, the Commission will also conduct hearing on the President's privilege issue where Rashtrapati Bhavan had a week before sought two weeks time to reply to the Commission's order asking them to submit the copies of letters written between former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the then President K R Narayanan.
