Indo-Bangla problems have to be solved by Govts Sunday, October 2 2005 15:29 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kolkata:
Bangladesh's top opposition leader Sheikh Hasina today (Oct 02, 2005) said that any problem between her country and India would have to be solved by the respective Governments.
''You have to discuss that question to the governments of the two countries. It is upto them to look into it. I am only the leader of the opposition,'' Hasina, a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, told newsmen after a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee.
The meeting, which lasted for an hour, was described by Hasina as a 'courtesy visit.'
Reminding that the Indo-Bangla water treaty was signed during her Prime Ministership, Hasina said that both Bhattacharjee and the then Chief Minister Jyoti Basu had played important roles in making the treaty possible.
''It is of no use to keep problems alive. They must be solved by the respective governments. In my time (as Prime Minister), I was able to solve some of the problems (with India),'' she said.
She avoided replying to questions relating to infiltration from Bangladesh.
Earlier, Hasina called on Jyoti Basu at his Salt Lake residence.
Basu described it as a courtesy call and told newsmen that there had not been any political discussion.
