NRI Mayor seeks Blair's assistance in Sarabjit case Thursday, October 6 2005 12:26 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
London:
An NRI Mayor has urged British Prime Minister Tony Blair to take up with the Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf the issue of release of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian national facing death sentence in Pakistan.
Mayor of Hounslow Darshan Grewal told sources here last night (Oct 05, 2005) that he had personally handed over a memorandum to Blair in this connection on Tuesday, saying Sarbjit Singh has already served 15 years in prison without any evidence of his involvement in any terrorist activity.
"During the trial, no witness has identified him as being responsible for the act he has been charged with," Grewal said.
"It has been proved beyond any doubt that Sarbjit Singh is a victim of mistaken identity," he stated in the memorandum.
Grewal, who had recently visited India in connection with his charity said he was approached by members of Sarbjit Singh's family including his 16-year-old daughter and his sister, Dalbir Kaur, seeking help for the release.
Stating that he did not condone violence or any terrorist act, Grewal said "this is a clear case of mistaken identity." He urged Blair to "take up this matter with Musharraf, President of Pakistan to re-consider and release Sarbjit Singh on humanitarian grounds.
