CPI campaign against shift in foreign policy
Thursday, October 6 2005 19:19 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mumbai: Expressing concern over 'dangerous' shift in United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government's foreign policy by moving towards 'capitalist' United States, the Communist Party of India (CPI) today (Oct 6, 2005) said it would soon launch a campaign following India supporting the US on Iran nuclear issue.

(CPI) general secretary, A B Bardhan today (Oct 6, 2005) said that his party's apprehension that the recent defence and nuclear deals signed between India and the US had pre-conditions, proved true when India asked Iran to adopt `flexible' approach with the US on nuclear issues.

"India could have stayed neutral like 12 other developing countries, like Sri Lanka, South Africa and Pakistan," Bardhan told newspersons in Mumbai.

He said that the party has organized an event at Delhi on October 28, to deliberate on the shift in foreign policy, where Left and other political parties, individuals, retired bureaucrats will participate in seminar and a convention.

According to him, the campaign will be launched before November since the meeting of the United Nations Security Council is scheduled next month to discuss reluctance of Iran to give concessions to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on its nuclear programme.

"In the past few years, the US has fought three wars against Yugoslovakia, Afghanistan and Iraq, and now they are turning against Iraq too by using the same language," he said.
