First CIC under Right to Information Act appointed Thursday, October 6 2005 12:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

The Government today (Oct 06, 2005) appointed retired IAS officer from Jammu and Kashmir Wajahad Habibullah as the first Chief Information Commissioner under the Right to Information Act, which came in force earlier this month.
Habibullah, a 1967 cadre officer, who retired on September 30 as Secretary, Panchayati Raj, will assume the office soon, official sources said.
With his appointment, the Government has set in motion the process of setting up a Commission, a mandatory provision under the Right to Information Act, which was passed by Parliament during the Monsoon Session.
