Pak earthquake measured 7.6 on Richter: US Govt

Washington: An earthquake that hit Pakistan early today (Oct 8, 2005) measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, the United States (US) Geological Survey said.

The agency said the epicentre of the tremor that occurred at 0350 GMT (0920 IST) was located 95 kilometres northeast of Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.

It added that the magnitude and location of the temblor could be revised when additional data and further analysis results became known.

No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time, according to the survey.

"However, this earthquake may have caused substantial damage and casualties due to its location and size," the US agency pointed out.
