As relief and rescue operations continued in full swing, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in the quake-hit state of Jammu and Kashmir for a first hand on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused by the killer quake that has claimed 947 lives thus far.
Soon after his arrival here, the Prime Minister flew to Tangdhar, one of the worst affected areas, and was scheduled to go to the second most ravaged Uri region in Baramulla district later in the day.
Security has been beefed up all across the city and at places where he is expected to pass by.
Singh, who arrived at the technical airport in the morning, was received by Governor Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and several cabinet ministers and MPs from the state. Senior Police and army officials were also present at the airport.
