Tuesday, October 18 2005 14:32 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mau (Uttar Pradesh): Local independent MLA, Mukhtar Ansari and 100 others were today (Oct 18, 2005) booked in an FIR for inciting riots in Mau where the situation was under control with no untoward incident being reported from anywhere since last night, official sources said.

The FIR against Ansari and 100 others was lodged in the Kotwali Police Station area booking them under various sections of IPC for inciting riots, murder and violation of curfew on the complaint of Jitendra Yadav of Kachchar village on the outskirts of the town, sources said.

Curfew continued for the fifth consecutive day and shoot-at-sight orders remained in force as jawans of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and police personnel patrolled the streets under supervision of senior officials.

Security personnel in strength have also been deployed at sensitive places in the neighboring districts of Ballia, Ghazipur and Deoria where stray incidents of violence had been reported yesterday, they said.

Principal Secretary, Home, Alok Sinha and Director General of Police, Yashpal Singh were expected to visit the town again to look into allegations by opposition parties regarding Ansari's role in the communal riots, sources said.

An alert had been sounded in Varanasi, Azamgarh and Jaunpur districts and a strict vigil was being maintained.

Seven people were killed and 36 others injured in communal violence that rocked the town on Thursday last over Dussehra celebrations leading to imposition of curfew.
