ITBP to get independent Air Wing, Siachen clothing Saturday, October 22 2005 16:50 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
In a significant move that will boost its operational capability, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is likely to get an independent Air Wing besides special 'Siachen' clothing and upgradation of road link to its positions in the inhospitable areas of Himalayan region.
A proposal to sanction an Air Wing for the force is at an advanced stage in the Union Home Ministry and an early decision is expected, ITBP Director General S K Kain told reporters here on the eve of the force's 44th Raising Day.
He said the Air Wing, which has been a demand of the force for years, is initially expected to comprise nine helicopters.
"The air unit will go a long way to ensure efficient accessibility and help in urgent evacuations from ITBP posts, most of which are in extremely difficult areas located at high altitudes along the 3488 km long border with China," Kain said.
He said the ITBP has 140 posts along with border, 90 of which have no road link. A proposal to construct roads to 28 such posts, identified as a priority, is at an advanced stage of sanction by the Government, the DG said.
Considering that the ITBP personnel are mostly performing duties in extremely cold conditions while serving at altitudes ranging from 9000 ft to 18000 ft, the Government has also sanctioned special warm clothing worn by the troops deployed at Siachen.
At least 12 items have already been approved by the Government, he said.
