Orders on Narayanan letters to Atal: Godhra Comm
Wednesday, October 26 2005 17:00 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Ahmedabad: The Godhra commission today (Oct 26, 2005) said that it would pass its orders soon in connection with the application seeking to call for the letters written by former President K R Narayanan to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee regarding steps taken during the post-Godhra communal riots in 2002.

The Nanavati-Shah commission heard arguments of the Gujarat Government counsel that said that it left the decision (whether to call for the letters or not) with the commission.

An application seeking to summon these letters was filed by advocate Mukul Sinha of the Jan Sangarsh Manch and he has also challenged the privilege sought by the Rashtrapati Bhavan in making its contents public.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan first sought privilege under Article 74(2) of the Constitution and then under section 123 of the Evidence Act to prevent the letters from being produced before the Commission.
