Tamil Nadu: Chennai gets respite from heavy rains
Friday, October 28 2005 10:15 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Chennai: After being battered by heavy rains yesterday (Oct 27, 2005), Chennai city had some respite from the rains today (Oct 28, 2005), following bright sunshine this morning.

The weather office said the deep depression, which lay centered 150 km northeast of Chennai, was moving in a northwesterly direction and was likely to cross between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh this afternoon.

The rainfall would reduce in Tamil Nadu and Chennai might face a few spells when the depression crosses the coast, the met office said.

Chennai experienced 42 cm of rain in 40 hours between Wednesday and midnight last.

Meanwhile, the death toll in rain related incidents has gone up to 65, with one more death reported due to electrocution in the city.

The city is limping back to normal, with buses, most of which were off the roads, starting to ply.

In most places, police and corporation authorities have drained the water. Over 50,000 persons have been evacuated from low lying areas, housed in corporation schools and provided one-lakh food packets.

The Government has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts for today.
