Commonwealth Games organizers assure tight security Sunday, October 30 2005 15:47 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The organizers of the 2010 Commonwealth Games today (Oct 30, 2005) assured tight security for the mega sporting event to be held in the national capital.
"We understand the need for providing tight security for the event and would take all possible measures in this regard," Lalit Bhanot, Secretary General of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, told sources.
"We are aware of the issues involved and a proper security system will be in place in time for the Commonwealth Games," Bhanot, also the Secretary General of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), said after the serial bomb blasts here yesterday (Oct 29, 2005), which killed more than 60 people and injured about 200.
The security issue assumes top priority for the event as a delegation from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), during its visit to Delhi last month, had said that it was one of the important areas to be looked into.
"We have asked Melbourne, which is hosting the Games next year, to strengthen security and that could be a guide for Delhi," CGF President Mike Fennell said.
However, the organizers are confident of providing tight security for the event, as there is enough time at hand.
"There was nothing to fear. There will be no problem," Bhanot asserted.
"There is no need to worry about the Commonwealth Games from the security angle as we will take all possible precautions," he said.
