J&K: Powerful blast near Mufti's residence, 6 dead Wednesday, November 2 2005 16:57 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Hours before Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad takes over as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, a suicide car bomber today (Nov 02, 2005) struck close to the venue of the swearing-in ceremony on the outskirts of the city killing five persons and injuring 15 others.
The bomber, belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammed, blew up the explosives-laden car about 15-km from the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre, the venue of the swearing-in ceremony, and near the private residence of outgoing Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed when challenged by security forces during a random search.
The driver refused to stop the vehicle and as a constable tried to block his way, the militant blew up the car at around 11.10 AM.
Besides the driver of the vehicle, a policeman and three civilians, including a woman, were killed in the attack, senior Superintendent of Police Munir Khan said.
Hospital sources said at least 15 people, including some traffic constables, were injured in the blast, that shook the entire civil lines area of the city.
Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit claimed responsibility for the blast, official sources said.
The security checks have been increased at all entry and exit points across the city in view of the swearing-in ceremony.
Ultras had fired rifle grenades towards Sayeed's private residence when he took oath of office in 2002.
