West Bengal: Narayan Biswas surrenders before court

Balurghat: Senior West Bengal CPI-M leader Narayan Biswas, who had resigned from the state cabinet recently, today (Nov 02, 2005) surrendered before a court in South Dinajpur district that had issued an arrest warrant against him for a 17-year old case of arson.

Sinha who arrived in the court at 11 am, submitted his surrender plea to the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Anjali Sinha. The court said it would hear the plea after 2 pm today.

Biswas is accused of burning down several houses at Gangarampur in South Dinajpur in May 1988 along with his supporters.

Biswas held the portfolio of Small-scale and Cottage Industries before resigning on October 31 after an arrest warrant was issued against him.

The West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee had forwarded the resignation of Biswas to Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on October 31.
