Chennai:
Assuring that those affected by recent floods in the city would be given the relief material, including Rs 2,000 in cash by her Government, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today (Nov 6, 2005) announced a solatium of Rs one lakh each to the families of those who died in the stampede at city's Vysarpadi area this morning.
In a release here, the Chief Minister also announced Rs 15,000 each to those injured.
She said that after the Government announced Rs 2,000 cash assistance, 10-kgs of rice, a dhoti and a saree and a litre of kerosene to those affected by floods, arrangements
had also been made to supply these items and 70,000 persons had been so far given the relief materials.
However, due to a rumour spread by some 'mischievous elements', more than 3,000 people had gathered in front of the relief distribution centre located in a college at Vysarpadi from 4.30 am. In the rush to enter the centre, six persons lost their lives and four sustained injuries, she said.
Stating that there was no need for affected people to be perturbed and indulge in protests, she said not a single affected person would be left out and all would be given the
relief announced by the Government.
