A major tragedy was averted today (Nov 8, 2005) with the detection and subsequent defusion of a 12-kg Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Doda-Udhampur road, a defence spokesman said here.
Following information provided by state police, a joint column of Rashtriya Rifle troops and police yesterday (Nov 7, 2005) neutralised the IED, which was buried by suspected ultras on the Doda-Udhampur road in an aluminium pitcher weighing approximately 12-kgs, the spokesman said.
The timely detection of the IED has saved the lives of many people, he said, adding, it could have otherwise caused a major tragedy as both civilian and security forces' traffic ply on this road.
Meanwhile, security forces have unearthed two hideouts at Gandoh in Doda district and Hathiyanipar in Akhnoor area of Jammu district during last 24 hours and recovered from them one UBGL grenade, two hand grenades, one pistol, a magazine and 79 rounds of AK ammunition.
