Following is the chronology of events in the Abu Salem extradition process:
Sep 18, 2002: Abu Salem and his girl friend Monica Bedi are arrested in Lisbon, Portugal for travelling on fake passports.
Sep 22, 2002: A Lisbon court rules out deportation of Salem to India.
Oct 8, 2002: A CBI team returns from Portugal without any assurance from Portuguese authorities on extradition of Salem.
Feb 20, 2003: Portugal has agreed to hand over Salem to India, Government informs Rajya Sabha.
July 13-19, 2003:Salem appeals against extradition efforts, claiming before a Portuguese court that he fears victimisation as he belongs to the minority community.
A Portuguese court turns down CBI's plea for extradition of Bedi.
Nov 28, 2003: Salem and Bedi sentenced to four years in jail by the Portuguese High Court for entering the country on forged documents.
Portugal High Court allows Bedi's extradition; the order is issued after the Portuguese Supreme Court asks the High Court to review the order of a trial court which had quashed a CBI petition for her extradition.
Feb 3, 2004: Portugal High court orders deportation of Salem to India
Feb 19, 2004: Salem appeals in Portugal's Supreme Court against the High Court order permitting his extradition to India.
Apr 12, 2004: Portugal refuses asylum to Bedi.
Jul 14, 2004: High Court of Lisbon, Portugal, orders extradition of Bedi to India.
Jul 19, 2004: High Court of Lisbon in Portugal orders extradition of Salem to India.
Jan 28, 2005: The CBI says it has inched closer to bringing back Salem, with the Portuguese Supreme Court passing an order granting his extradition to India.
Feb 24, 2005: Portugese Constitutional Court dismisses Bedi's plea to stay extradition, clearing way for her deportation.
Jul 18, 2005: Constitutional Court of Portugal rejects Salem's appeal against extradition to India, clearing way for his deportation.
